Plants that Deter Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes like to rest in vegetation when they are not looking to bite.  This is why we spray shrubs and trees.  That said there are some plants that mosquitoes don’t like.  Planting these around your yard and where you sit can help reduce the mosquito population.  They can look great as part of your landscape or in containers.

Ten plants are regularly spotlighted for their mosquito deterrence:

  • Basil
  • Catnip
  • Citronella
  • Garlic
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Lemon Balm
  • Marigold
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary

We see citronella commonly used in burning candles and torches, while rosemary is a standard ingredient in barrier sprays and topical repellents.
